Statistically, one in four people reading this ‘dog-friendly accommodation’ blog will probably own a dog (in the UK). The stats are similar, if a little lighter, for our European friends (and, yes, you are our friends – if you’ll still have us!).
The chances are that 100% of you also love skiing, but no doubt a very small minority of you know of any half-decent digs where you and your hound can stay together!
Sister outfit to The Chalet Company, The Ski Company offers a range of stunning luxury apartments and allow you, for a small supplementary fee, to bring your dog. Now, we’re focussing on dog-friendly accommodation, but this guide relates to cats too. Or monkeys if you can get them through customs at the airport…
Pet and dog-friendly accommodation in France
Here are some of these fine properties that welcome mutts with open paws:
La Plagne
- Le Chalet des Cimes
- Pet supplement @ EUR 84
Once owned by the founders of Le Chum de Pedigree, Le Chalet des Cimes has a long history of welcoming our four-legged friends in out of the cold. And, because this property is located right on the slopes, your dog will not require a minibus transfer to the slopes. Win!
Les Arcs
- La Sources des Arcs
- Pet supplement @ EUR 85
Five-star Sources des Arcs is the official ski accommodation partner of Crufts and so you know that you are going to be well looked-after (although guests are reminded not to whistle at staff members nor expect them to crawl through tunnels for a biscuit). Content yourself with the ski-in/ski-out location, the spa, the restaurants and forget the rigours of international canine competition!
Les Menuires
- Hameau de la Sapiniere
- Pet supplement @ EUR 84
Social-media super-dog Fenton stays in Chalet Skadi every Christmas. He can be seen running down the corridors, through the lobby and into the Wellness Area, all the while being trailed by his hapless owner. Some of our more coy guests may wish to avoid this period as it can get quite busy with all the Pup-arazzi camped outside. Pardon the pup – sorry, pun.
Méribel
- Les Fermes de Méribel
- Pet supplement @ EUR 65
In the final briefing to his architects, Dave Ferme (owner of Les Fermes de Méribel) sat back and asked himself: “What would the dog owner demand in her dog-friendly accommodation?” And, my word, did the architects (Chien & Co,) hit the spot. Some residual “human comforts” remain such as the swimming pool and spa, but guests can ask for beds to be replaced by boxes and for plates to be exchanged by bowls on the ground. For a small fee, we can also throw tennis balls for you to fetch. More info about Méribel here.
Val Thorens
- Hameau du Kashmir
- Pet supplement @ EUR 154 (Cesar ain’t cheap!)
Hameau du Kashmir is the Cesar of ski apartments: very well-packaged and tasteful across the board. Where Kashmir does reach and even surpass a small golden package of premium dog food featuring the image of a cute West Highland Terrier, is in its location on the slopes in Val Thorens and in its facilities – swimming pool, sauna and hammam. Oh, and its restaurant and bar. And ski shop!
